1. INTRODUCTION
────────────────
1.1 What is JimBall ?
──────────────────────
What is JimBall? Okay, to be blunt... JimBall is an arcade game!
It isn't Mortal Kombat(C)* or Street Fighter(C)* but we are rather
proud of it! We made it with our eyes closed... well, okay we didn't
but...
JimBall's objective is simple: Move the green Super Bubble(C)**
around the screen avoiding death in many flavors. Death's flavors are:
Falling off the bottom of the screen and... ( register and find out! )
You are trying to save Super Bubble(C)** by getting him/her safely
through a multitude of levels and traps and finally into a yellow
doorway. Once you reach the doorway, you are sent to the next
exciting, fun filled level.
Pretty simple huh? Well....
1.2 What is needed to run JimBall ?
────────────────────────────────────
To safely run JimBall, you must own:
- An IBM or compatible
- 640K ( recommended but not required )
- An EGA/VGA graphics card capable of 640x480x16colors
- A 100% Sound Blaster*** compatible sound card
( optional ) for sound effects
Your JIMBALL archive file should contain the following files:
JBALL00.DAT ───┐
JBALL01.DAT │
JBALL02.DAT ├─── Various data files
JBALL03.DAT ───┘
FILE_ID.DIZ The BBS label
JIMBALL.DOC You are reading this one now
JIMBALL.EXE The executable file ( the game )
REGISTER.DOC Registration/order form
CT-VOICE.DRV the Sound Blaster(C)*** voice driver
( future software releases will eliminate
this if we receive a positive response
to JimBall )
2. Getting started
───────────────────
2.1 JimBall main menu
──────────────────────
In the main menu, you have four options:
1. Story - Since every good arcade game (no matter how silly)
has a story behind the madness, so too does
JimBall. We won't give it to you here 'cause we'd
like you to see it in the game!
2. Directions - Well, what a fine game it would be without
instructions, huh ?
3. Play the Game - Starts the game ( ! )
4. Quit JimBall - Speaks for itself...
2.2 Playing JimBall
────────────────────
Although instructions are included in the game for those of us who
hate reading documentation, we will replicate those instructions here !
To move the Super Bubble(C)** around the playing area you use the
arrow keys. Left and right to move in those directions respectively.
The up arrow to will make the Super Bubble(C)** jump. To jump on an
angle you must jump and then push/hold either the left or right arrow.
If you fall a short distance (about 40 pixels) the Super Bubble(C)**
will mysteriously hover for a split second making it easier to make
long distant jumps. To pause the game, push "P". To resume your game
push any key. (In the higher boards the reason for pausing the game
will become evident). To quit the game, push "Q". To explore our Fake
Dos, push "B". ( this is a BOSS key for those of you using this game at
work or school )
You start off with ONLY ten lives. This may sound ridiculous,
but just trust us and play the game. Each board you complete you
receive an additional life.

3.1 Who is New Wave Media
─────────────────────────
Who is New Wave Media? Otherwise known as N.W.M., we are a small
group of programmers who are interested in programming entertainment and
music software. We are somewhat self taught ( we learned PASCAL in high
school and surpassed
our teacher in some respects. However, our teacher did spawn our
activities in a REAL programming language and she did a good job doing
so. (Previously we were BASICA jokers... ) ) and are continually
learning new things.

Who is Jim?
Hi! I am 17 years old. When I was about 11 years old i got a
piece of equipment that could not pass for a computer. It was a
keyboard that would plug into your TV, four colors, and did not have a
disk drive. Supposedly, you could play games that were a step above
Atari. Baseball, some boxing game, a space something or other, but I
never bought any games for it. This pseudo-computer did have BASIC
built into its stone age chips and it came with a BASIC book. After
learning how to program some what, I learned that you could save your
work onto a normal cassette tape. Retrieving it would only work about
60% of the time. When I got a new computer, a Tandy 1000 SL/2, I
learned DOS and more BASIC and finally played some real games. I am
the kind of person that wonders how things are made so I tried to make
some cheesy things on my own. That worked out pretty well. I later
bought a used 286 Packard Bell and on that I learned PASCAL. JimBall
is the first game I made with my knowledge of PASCAL. Recently, I
bought a 486 DX/33 computer and have started working on another game
that we will add on too later. We will be sending that game out too
and as many people have said already, it is a lot more fun and complex
than JimBall will ever be.

Who is Jace?
Hello. I am the guy you may know as JerkBoy on some BBSs around
the 610 area code. I am also the composer of the music with the name
of New~Waves. If you don't know about New~Waves, read section 3.2. I
was introduced into the world of computers when my family purchased a
computer from Tandy. It was state of the art. A Tandy 1000 TL! Okay,
so it isn't the greatest nowadays... now we have 386 and 486 ( and some
say ACTUAL PENTIUMS! ) machines.
It was a simple computer... but it was my doorway into the
somewhat stereotyped world of computers. I moved on from there with a
step up to a 16Mhz 2500 XL/2. Still a Tandy... still 286... but it had
256 color VGA! Yeah, remember when THAT was popular?!
Now I have stepped into the world of the 486 DX/33! I do rather
like it. I have a Sound Blaster 16 ASP, with Wave Blaster, from which
I compose music and enjoy entertainment products. I have a modem ( I
won't tell you the speed... I'm getting a faster one, really! )
The modem also was a doorway to new things but that is another
story entirely.
Any questions comments? Write and ask. I enjoy Snail Mail... and
you may also reach me at the POWER BBS (610) 740-9196.
Thankyou for playing JimBall! Consider registering!

3.2 Who is New~Waves ?
──────────────────────
Who is New~Waves? There has been some confusion about the
difference between New~Waves and New Wave Media, so I am in the process
of designating a new name for the music group within N.W.M. to remove
this confusion.
For now, New~Waves is the name of N.W.M.'s composers. As of now
there is only myself, Jace who is composing music in our group. Whether
or not this will change will be seen in the future.
I compose mostly incidental music, spawned by short stories that I
have written or am writing currently. I have composed twenty-six songs,
consisting of .MOD, .669, .MTM, and General MIDI .MID formats. The
software that I use for each is:
.MOD : MOD Edit v2.0 and 3.01 by Norman Lin
.669 : Composer669 v1.3 by Tran of Renaissance
.MTM : MultiTracker Module Editor v.1.01ß by Daniel Goldstein
of Renaissance
.MID : Twelve Tone Systems' CakeWalk Apprentice for Windows[TM]
v.1.04 by Greg Hendershott
If you have any questions or comments regarding my music, please send
me mail or drop me a message on our world headquarters BBS
the POWER BBS at 610-740-9196.
3.3 Future Software from New Wave Media
───────────────────────────────────────
JimBall is the first entertainment release that New Wave Media has
made and we plan to continue if we get some good feedback about the
game.
Our next creation is in the making and already ten times better
and more "professional" than JimBall is. It is a new style of board
game with elements of many of your favorites, like Othello and Hexxagon,
with a bit of "Flashy extras" too!
Keep a look out for this game in the near future, with a release
date of possibly late Summer or early Fall of 1994.
Also in the planning stages is a Module editor, or composer that
will hopefully support "everything". Pro Tracker Effects, all the current
formats, 16-bit sound samples, MIDI, etc. Maybe even a NEW format (but
who needs another one??). This is only in the planning stages, due to our
current Assembly knowledge, but I intend to work on such a thing in
the future.
Thankyou for taking the time to read this information. We hope you
enjoy JimBall and consider registering for more levels.
Again, any comments, questions, chat is WELCOME. We are very
friendly and never "talk down" to people like some other
programmers do in their "VAST KNOWLEDGE" ... :)
